The Majesty of the Matanuska Valley

Whatever the situation, this scenic helicopter tour in the Matanuska Valley checks many boxes when it comes to having a great time. This tour starts in the quaint town of Glacier View, right in the heart of the glacially carved Matanuska Valley. This area is world renowned and exalted by educators and explorers alike.

Sheep Mountain Air and MICA Guides, locally owned and operated outfitters, have partnered to offer this VIP experience. Get priority check in at base and meet your personal flight crew who will guide you along as you get ready to take flight. Once you’ve been prepped for take off, this team will help you load into the helicopter from the nearby launch pad.

We Have Lift Off

It only takes about 25 feet of lifting into the air before you get your first taste of amazement from your passenger seat. And with each seat you will get views from the windshield and personal window. Each window offers a full sized panel for viewing. As you hover over rolling pine forests you might be able to spot wildlife below, right away, so keep your eyes peeled.

The helicopter is equipped with personal headsets and built in microphones. This way, you’ll be able to hear all the interpretive information from your pilot and be able to talk to others easily. Your pilot will navigate the air currents that take you over the Matanuska River. As you soar over the braided river and careen down the jagged canyon, until you’ll start to spot the confluence of the Matanuska Glacier and the river.

Panoramic Beauty

Take in a panoramic view of where meltwater, ice, and crumbled rock, all come together: the toe of the glacier. From above you might enjoy an extra breath of relief seeing that you don’t have to tango with any of the giant crowds that can swarm the edge of the glacier in the summer. Instead, you’ll enjoy rarer sightings of grey silt meltwater confluence with the river below, bright blue hues between ice fins and kettle ponds, and the artistic lines of lateral moraine striping the white ice.

You will cover many miles of glacier backcountry and features of the Chugach Mountains, and on clear days, be able to look out and see 3 other mountain ranges! Your pilot will fly you into canyons alongside the glacier that few get to see, offering sights of grandeur and abundant life. And soon, you’ll be close to the snow covered peaks, exploring from the air where the heaviest snow accumulation occurs. This snow will eventually condense and become ice that travels down the valley with the rest of the glacier.

A Unique Experience

While in the air you will have 30 minutes of flight and sights to enjoy. We recommend wearing darker colored clothing so that you can reduce reflection on the windows and take in those epic views.
