Alaska Campgrounds

Camping is a great option if you truly want to experience the wilderness of Alaska. It’s really hard to choose just one area or spot best for camping because of all Alaska has something wonderful to offer. We’ve put together some suggestions of Alaskan campgrounds throughout the state that have fun attractions and unique locations.

Interior Camping

Chena River Lakes Campground, located in Fairbanks, is a perfect location for many types of campers. With two separate parks, Lake Park and River Park, there are 80 available sites total. There are even sites only accessible by boat, presenting a more remote camping opportunity. There are trails, volleyball courts, horseshoes, and the best perk of all, it’s a great spot for viewing the Northern Lights. This campground  centralizes you to nearby recreation trails and gives you access to the Chena River too.

Brushkana Campground inside of Denali National Park is another fun option. Located on Brushkana Creek, the campground provides opportunities to explore the forest and spot wildlife. There’s access for RV’s, cars, and tents, so it’s a great spot for anyone looking to spend some time within this beautiful park.  There is a trail right from the campground that leads you to an excellent view of the Brushkana Creek and the Alaska Range. Since this campground is on BLM land it is on a first come, first served reservation basis.

Camp Near Mendenhall

You could also try camping at Mendenhall Lake, about 13 miles from Juneau. With a campsite overlooking Mendenhall Glacier, this campground is a hiker’s dream. There are several trails nearby, including the 5-6 hour roundtrip West Glacier Trail, with an 1,300 foot elevation gain! Being able to wake up with spectacular views and take the trail right from your stay is a great way to explore and get connected.

Hidden Gem

Our final spot is Hidden Lake Campground located in the Kenai Peninsula. This beautiful campground is a hidden gem, and a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Expect to catch some fresh fish and then cook it over a campfire. This is a great place to spot wildlife and get a taste of the coast. The Kenai is known for it’s bountiful population of wild bears so be aware!
