Alaskan Delicacies

The food of Alaska is sourced from the land and sea surrounding it. So, it’s no surprise that the best meals you can get in Alaska are centered around seafood. Here you’ll find some of our suggestions of the most iconic foods you to try while in Alaska. We will also let you know which the true Alaskan local favorites are.

Salmon

This first suggestion is pretty obvious. We are aware that you can find salmon almost anywhere, but in Alaska they make it into almost anything. You can find it smoked, steamed, grilled, dried and made into chowders, dips, and even sandwich spreads. It could be Alaska’s most versatile fish. And, can offer a fresh catch with lots of flavor.

Reindeer Dogs

These dogs are the one truly famous food of Alaska. It’s their very own version of NYC’s hot dog, loved by locals just as much as visitors. These sausages blend reindeer (or sometimes caribou) with pork or beef. Find a fun roadside stand and give one a try! Top it with onions, ketchup, mustard, or even relish.

Crab

Who didn’t guess this one? Alaska is world renowned when it comes to King and Dungeness crab catches. There are actually ten different species of crab in Alaska, all equally delicious. Many places offer catch your own tours, you can buy right from a coastal city stand, or get a gourmet meal at a local eatery.

Berries are a plenty throughout Alaska, especially during the summer, and are another local favorite. Salmonberries, blueberries, cranberries, blackberries, raspberries, and many more. So, if you see a jam or a dessert made with berries, you can guarantee they came straight from the Alaskan terrain.

Eskimo Ice Cream

A crowd pleaser for visitors and a food looked at as an old school means of survival for the locals. Originally named Akutaq, this is an indigenous dish made of animal fat, fish, berries, greens from the tundra, and sometimes snow.
